In 2012, more than 841 000 patients were treated for diabetes in the Czech Republic. Diabetes prevalence has reached more than 8%. Type II diabetes is the most prevalent, type I diabetes has been diagnosed in 7% of patients (55542 patients). Also, chronic complication of diabetes exhibit growing tendency, with 29% of patients having experienced some form of chronic complication. Diabetes was newly diagnosed in over 65,000 patients, 250 of whom were younger than 19 years. It was recorded as a cause of death in over 2,000 cases.
A National diabetology program is active in the Czech Republic. It defines the purpose of diabetes treatment: to prevent the complications from arising, or reduce their development, ultimately leading to prolonging the life of the patients while maintaining its quality. Recommended treatment procedures are a part of this program and are regularly updated by the Czech diabetology society. Several other organizations take part in the National diabetology program, including patient organizations.
Diabetes treatment takes place in general practitioners’ ambulances, in specialized diabetology out-patient offices, and in diabetology centers. Over 80% of all diabetes patients are treated in a specialist out-patient clinics, around 17% are followed-up by GP. Every year, the number of specialists increases. In the year 2012, there were 652 doctors and 590 medical staff altogether working in diabetes treatment. Diabetology specialists provided over 2,200,000 visits.
Most diabetes patients are treated with peroral anti-diabetics, which are part of the recommended treatment procedure. Pharmaceutical treatment is offered to all patients immediately following the diagnosis. This type of treatment uses metformin as the principal drug substance, ie. in almost 50% of all cases of diabetes. However, insulin treatment is also used in an increasing number of cases. The number of patient with a diet as the only treatment option is steadily decreasing.
